University of Trinidad and Tobago’s (UTT’s) Assistant Professor, Dr. Kumar Mahabir, has won a string of awards this year.

His latest was The Humming Bird Silver Medal conferred upon him by the President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago during last Wednesday’s National Awards Ceremony.

Mahabir was among 56 persons in the country to receive an award in celebration of the anniversary of Independence at Queen’s Hall in St. Ann’s. He was honoured for his loyal and devoted service to his country in field of education.

In April this year, Mahabir was the only academic from the Caribbean to win an international scholarship funded by the Government of the Netherlands. The scholarship allowed him to travel to Cairo in Egypt to participate in a workshop entitled “Visual Methodologies: Beyond the Written and Towards the Sensory.”

In the same month, Mahabir was presented with a Distinguished Alumni Award by the University of the West Indies (UWI) Alumni Association. He was among a group of 50 alumni selected from about 20,000 graduates who attended UWI for the past 50 years.

In July, a documentary which Mahabir directed was accepted for screening at the Belize International Film Festival. It is entitled, “Artifacts of East Indians in Belize: Remembering the Past to Secure the Future” and is produced by Sylvia Gilharry Perez.

Mahabir has been recently appointed by the Government to serve as a Director on the Board of NALIS (National Library and Information System Authority), and council member in the state entity, The National Heritage Trust of Trinidad and Tobago.

Mahabir obtained his Ph.D. in Anthropology at the University of Florida and received his BA and M.Phil. degrees in Literatures in English from UWI.

He is the author of eight (8) books including two national bestsellers Caribbean East Indian Recipes and Medicinal and Edible Plants used by East Indians of Trinidad and Tobago. His most recent books are Indian Caribbean Folklore Spirits and The Indian Diaspora in the Caribbean.

Mahabir has also published several articles in scholarly journals including the New West Indian Guide, Caribbean Studies, Florida Journal of Anthropology, Toronto South Asian Review, and Caribbean Medical Journal.
